Venice
the greatest masterpiece that our species has produced
"The lagoon is an ancient work of nature. At first the tide, the ebb and the moving soil, then the progressive lowering of the prehistoric waters, shaped a considerable marshy area at the upper end of the Adriatic, which, after having been submerged by the high tide, is partially freed from the ebb. Thus, human art took possession of the most eminent points, and Venice was born, connecting a hundred islands within itself and surrounded by a hundred others".
