HISTORY
Of the residential complex you can admire the older part with the ruins of some domus, probably reserved for court dignitaries and decorated with precious black and white mosaics and portraits of the house’s owners. You can also see some parts of the imperial palace expanded in the 4th century A.D. by Constantine and his mother Helena, which made up the public basilica, also known as the “Temple of Venus and Cupid”.
In the area you will also find the ruins of the Amphitheatrum Castrense, the second Roman amphitheatre conserved after the Colosseum, reserved for the imperial court and designed to seat “only” 3,500 spectators. Don’t miss the inside of the amphitheatre, occupied by the vegetable garden of the monks of the nearby monastery, whose iron and glass entrance gate was designed by Jannis Kounellis.
Visiting the archaeological area of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme is an experience you won’t forget. Here you will discover a unique place that lifts the lid on part of Rome’s long history.
The Santa Croce in Gerusalemme complex is included in the “Hidden archaeology” programme, a series of exclusive openings of archaeological sites usually closed to the public.
