HISTORY

Castello Aragonese, the seat of the museum, was built in the final years of the 15th century, incorporating the remains of a lavish Roman villa. Located in Baia, the ideal place for the emperors and aristocrats of Rome to rest and take their holidays, over the centuries it underwent major transformations before eventually becoming an exhibition space. Its conversion into a museum has made it possible to bring together artefacts stored at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples with materials of inestimable value recovered from the excavations carried out across the Phlegraean area.

The archaeological museum is distributed over a number of floors. Visiting the collections also involves climbing the stairs and walking across the panoramic terraces, culminating with the spectacular Piazza d’Armi, from where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the entire Gulf of Naples.
In this stunning location you can take in masterpieces such as the imposing Sacellum of the Augustales from Miseno and the series of sculptures from the Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio, uncovered during an underwater dig.
