THE HISTORY
According to legend, the name Baiae derives from Baios, helmsman of Ulysses who died here and was celebrated with series of sculptures discovered in a Roman nymphaeum at Punta Epitaffio.
The first settlements date to the 3rd century B.C. and reached their zenith at the beginning of the Roman Empire when due to the quantity and wealth of the Roman patrician villas Baiae was nicknamed “little Rome” and was the emperors’ summer residence of choice.
VISITING BAIAE
At Baiae archaeology park you will be able to walk among the old Roman buildings and baths, embraced by the greenery of the Mediterranean scrub and the intense blue sea which form the backdrop to these ancient locations of patrician otium today just as they did yesterday.
The Park’s archaeological heritage is of inestimable value: the imposing remains of bathing and water systems, the so-called “temples” (in reality, baths) of Mercury, Venus, Diana and the baths of Sosandra; the Cento Camerelle; the Piscina Mirabile; the tomb of Agrippina; the military port of Miseno; the monumental theatre and tombs.
Our rich educational programme will acquaint you with the many stories and dimensions of this mythical land. Why don’t you come and see us?
