The Domus del Larario of Assisi is proof of how this lovely Umbrian town is packed with surprises that not everybody knows about. You can discover it too by visiting this old Roman home located under Palazzo Giampè, currently home to a police station.
The Domus del Larario, a prestigious residence dating to the 1st century A.D., was uncovered by chance just a few years ago, in 2001.

A LITTLE HISTORY ON THE DOMUS OF LARARIO
It consists of a peristylium, a portico with brick columns covered with stucco, five rooms with decorated walls and majestic two-tone mosaic floors made with extreme precision.
The walls of the domus reach a height of over 4 metres and are decorated with strong Pompeian red and ochre shades and little pinakes with scenes of family life. In one room a terra cotta statue was found which, perhaps depicting one of the protectors of the house, Silvanus, would usually have been housed in a lararium, or holy shrine, hence the name ‘Domus del Larario’.
WHAT AWAITS YOU AT THE DOMUS OF LARARIO
The Domus del Larario transmits the great charm of Roman Assisi, often largely ignored in favour of the medieval wonders of the city of St. Francis. At the Domus del Larario you can observe the typical structure of the Roman domus: the stunning mosaics and beautifully preserved frescoes are only matched by those of Rome and Pompeii. The wedding image found in the bedroom (cubiculum) is particularly striking and is certain to delight visitors.
The ancient Domus of Assisi, well away from the usual tourist spots, guards a mysterious and riveting past. Choose the other sights on the Assisi Underground tour to immerse yourself in the city’s Roman history.
