One of Assisi’s most stunning Roman sights is the so-called House of Propertius, dating to the 1st century A.D. and uncovered during excavations in the 1800s and 1900s.
It is one of the best conserved domus in Assisi, datable to between the second half of the 1st century B.C. and the first decades of the 1st century A.D. and located under Palazzo Giampè in Via Sant’Antonio, in the heart of the historical centre.

VISTING THE DOMUS
On entering you can admire the frescoed walls with candelabras on a mustard-coloured background and pinakes, little fresco paintings of the 4th Pompeian Style.
Your gaze will then be attracted to the “viridarium”, an entire niche wall featuring sinuous and intertwining branches, little flowers and red heart-shaped leaves, and lots of different birds. Lower down you will also notice other animals: a cricket and a tortoise.
On the walls you will discover lots of inscribed graffiti of poetic verses, one of which makes reference to a domus Musae.
The domus is located under the apse of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Santuario della Spogliazione, an extremely important place also in Franciscan history: in fact, it was here that St. Francis took off his clothes and renounced his father’s patrimony in front of Bishop Guido, his father Pietro di Bernardone and the entire community of Assisi.
The Domus of Assisi will acquaint you with the Roman history of the city.
You can also visit the other sights of the Assisi Underground tour to enhance your experience of the ancient Roman city.
