The Flavian Amphitheatre of Pozzuoli is an exceptional example of Roman architecture, the third biggest ever constructed by the Romans after the Colosseum and the Amphitheatre of Capua.
Built in 1 A.D., it is a splendid example of the prestigious developments in engineering achieved in Ancient Rome. It was mainly used for gladiatorial combats and had a capacity of up to 40,000 spectators.

THE HISTORY
The Amphitheatre of Pozzuoli was located in an area in which the main roads connecting ancient Puteoli and the surrounding area merged together. It had three superimposed architectural orders, four main entrances and twelve secondary entrances. It also had a velarium, a mobile fabric cover used if it rained or was too sunny. The remains of the gears used to lift and transport the cages containing animals into arena are still clearly visible in the underground complex.
The martyrdom of St. Januarius in the 4th century A.D. was prepared here before being carried out at the Solfatara crater. A small church was built in memory of this event in 1689. Subsequently abandoned, it was later replaced by a chapel that is still partially visible today.
