VISITING THE HOUSE OF AUGUSTUS
Augustus chose the Palatine as his place of residence right at the start of his political career, constructing a very simple house free of luxuries here. The building is divided into a domus privata on the left and a domus publica on the right. At the centre, an atrium with tablinum.
Although far from excessive, the decorations Augustus chose for his home were very elegant and lavish. You will see patterned effects and illusionistic perspective, surreal forms and human or animal figures appearing from plant motifs; purples and gold, dazzling shades that dominate the decorations.
One obvious example is the “Room of the Masks” (which takes its name from the elements painted on the frames midway up the walls) which is decorated like a complex theatre set.
A visit to the fascinating House of Augustus will leave you with unforgettable memories!
