Museo del Vetro. History
Back in 1689 the bishop of Torcello, Marco Giustinian, established his residence in a splendid Gothic-style palace on the island of Murano. It was at this prestigious site that the first section of the glass museum was founded in 1861 to gather together numerous ancient and recent examples of an art that had made Venice famous worldwide. Here, just a few minutes’ vaporetto ride from Venice, a genuine journey back in time awaits you.
Visiting the museum
Have you always had an interest in precious Murano glass chandeliers? Have you always wondered how murrine are made? Are you enchanted by the delicate perfection of blown glass? Have you heard of the Venetian ‘impiraresse’ but aren’t really sure who they are? Come to the Glass Museum where you can learn about all these things and much more besides.
The absorbing and fascinating displays will take you through centuries of the history of glass, from the Roman finds in the archaeology section through to the first Venetian artefacts of the Middle Ages, and from 15th century crystal glass to 16th century filigree glass. From the birth of Briati’s armed chandeliers, which revolutionised the glass world, to the grandiose mirrors of the 18th century and through to modern designer creations.
Plan your visit to the Glass Museum right away. Be amazed by the splendour of an art that made Venice famous the world over!
