The “Pietro Griffo” Regional Archaeology Museum of Agrigento is one of the most important and popular museums in Sicily and an indispensable stop-off for those who want to learn about the Valley of the Temples.
Designed by architect Franco Minissi and built in the 1960s, the building is located on the site of the upper agora of the ancient city and, in more recent times, of the villa of Ciantro Panitteri.

HISTORICAL NOTES
Named after archaeologist Pietro Griffo, the Archaeology Museum exhibits over 5,000 artefacts that tell the story of the Agrigento area from Prehistory through to the Greco-Roman era.
The materials come from the archives of the Museo Civico, from private collections or were acquired from the archaeology museums of Palermo and Syracuse. The largest part of the collection, however, is made up of artefacts recovered during the digs that have been conducted since the 1940s.
VISITING THE MUSEUM
There are two different sections, one dedicated to the ancient city of Akragas/Agrigentum and the other to significant central and southern Sicilian contexts.
As well as being one of the most important museums in Sicily, the museum is also a lively cultural hub, often hosting temporary exhibitions, concerts and didactic-educational activities that we recommend investigating.
An amazing experience in Agrigento awaits you. What are you waiting for, book your visit now!
