VISITING THE PYRAMID
Between 18 and 12 B.C., praetor and tribune of the plebs Caius Cestius had his tomb built in pyramid form, as was the trend at the time. This burial monument, today the only one of its kind in Rome, is 36 metres high and about 30 metres wide.
With its bright white cover made from large blocks of Carrara marble, it stands out against the Aurelian Walls, which incorporated it a few centuries later. On the façade there is an inscription which says that the construction work lasted 330 days.
The monument is 36 metres high by 29.6 metres wide. It appears smaller today because the level of the road has been raised.
Thanks to the restoration work carried out by the Archaeology Department of Rome, today it is possible to venture inside the pyramid. There are refined Third Style frescoes against a white background with figures of people making offerings and winged Victories on the ceiling.
You’ll be amazed by what you see at the Pyramid of Cestius. Immerse yourself in its atmosphere and you’ll discover the many secrets it conceals within. What are you waiting for, book your visit now!
