Located under Piazza del Popolo, the Roman cisterns of the city of Todi are a true monument of hydraulic engineering.
Under the roads and houses of Todi there are over 3 km of water tunnels, Roman and medieval cisterns, and hundreds of wells, cellars and cavities; a fascinating system of underground architectures that wind around the inside of the hill of Todi, skilfully exploiting the characteristics of the land.

There are two large underground cisterns which were constructed in the second half of the 1st century B.C. when Todi became a Roman colony called Iulia Fida Colonia Tuder.
VISITING THE ROMAN CISTERNS OF TODI
Today it is a privilege to be able to visit them: as you head down a fascinating path into underground Todi, you will be able to discover a genuine subterranean cultural legacy.
Each of the cisterns consists of twelve 8 x 3.5 metre spaces made from cement and connected by narrow passages. Both were supposed to be fed by the spring water at the top of the hill, originating from the present-day Rocca area.
Discover subterranean Todi, the “invisible city" is ready to reveal its secrets.
