The Roman Forum in Assisi was the hub of the social, economic and administrative life of ancient Asisium. Located under the modern-day Piazza del Comune, dominated by the imposing Temple of Minerva, an original and absorbing experience is guaranteed here.
Unearthed during excavations conducted in 1836, today it enables you to touch the remains of a rich and sophisticated Roman city under modern Assisi with your own hands.

ROMAN FORUM. VISIT
The Roman Forum of Assisi is accessed via a small entrance in Via Portico. The visit will take you through the Romanesque crypt of the former church of San Nicolò “de platea”, which displays sarcophagi, capitals and inscriptions from Assisi and the surrounding area. You will find yourselves walking among the ruins of the monumental tribune with podium and seats for the judges, a little temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux, the cistern and some tabernae.
A visit to the Roman Forum is proof that Roman Assisi is just as interesting as the traditional image of medieval Assisi.
Other ideas for making the most of your trip to Umbria’s most famous town? Go on a guided tour of underground Assisi, another experience we highly recommend.
