The Synagogue of Cherasco, a little town in the province of Cuneo, is one of Italy’s most evocative Jewish buildings.
Very simple from the outside, this building conserves a valuable treasure trove on its third and top floors. The atmosphere inside is intimate and homely: a special place to admire and contemplate.

HISTORY
The Jewish presence in Cherasco has been documented since the 16th century. Work began on the synagogue in 1723 when King Victor Amadeus II ruled that the Jews of Piedmont be segregated in the Jewish ghettos. After alternating periods of inclusion and exclusion, only in 1848 were the Jews of Piedmont finally emancipated.
VISITING THE SYNAGOGUE OF CHERASCO
An expert guide will illustrate the history of this small community and highlight all the details of this little place of prayer for you.
You will be enchanted by the simple and elegant 18th century decorations, the octagonal bimah (elevated platform or pulpit) with canopy, embellished with painted Solomonic columns, the finely sculpted and golden aron (an ark in which the Sefer Torah, the scrolls of Jewish law, are kept), and the little matroneum (balcony or gallery originally reserved for women) which looks out on the room from the upper floor.
You can visit the little room that was once the community’s study room, whose windows face the ancient ghetto. Don’t miss the photo exhibition which will tell you the story of the Piedmont Jews and the incredible synagogues in the region in picture form.
Visiting the Synagogue of Cherasco means coming into contact with an original piece of historic, cultural and aesthetic heritage. Book your visit to this fascinating monument now!
