HISTORY
It was built in the 1st century B.C. in white Greek pentelic marble and was dedicated to Hercules Victor as, according to legend, this was the site of one of the 12 labours of the Greek hero, the place he slew the monster Cacus who stole from and terrorised the population.
In the 12th century it was transformed into a church dedicated to Santo Stefano Rotondo and later to Santa Maria del Sole in the 16th century. Some frescoes from the end of the 15th century have been recovered inside the cella.
