Villa Jovis is a majestic Roman villa that looks out onto Capri’s sea. Residence of Emperor Tiberius, it is a privileged place with hundreds of years of history that boasts a panorama unlike any other in the world.
Located at the top of a cliff with a sheer drop of over three hundred metres down to the sea, the villa extends across the rocky spur of Monte Tiberio covering an area of around 7000 m2. Regarded as the Roman Emperor’s main residence in Capri, it is one of the island’s most fascinating landmarks, reached by walking across some of its most characteristic landscapes.

According to Tacitus, Tiberius had twelve residences in Capri, of which Villa Jovis was the biggest and most lavish.
The first excavation projects date to the 1930s when the imposing remains of the imperial residence, similar in appearance to a fortress but also to an otium villa, began to resurface. However, the remains that have been discovered still leave many questions in terms of the origins of the construction and its layout.
The most interesting rooms include the calidarium and Tiberius’ private lodgings consisting of three rooms: the entrance hall, preceded by a covered terrace, and the two rooms with large windows and floors of multi-coloured marble intarsia.
Villa Jovis is one of the many treasures of the Island of Capri. Visiting it means entering a magical atmosphere where you will almost feel like you are on top of the world because of its enviable location. Stepping foot in the residence of a Roman emperor, admiring the pomp of Ancient Rome, walking among the mosaics, marbles and bronze tubs is a unique experience, as is that of looking over the Gulf of Naples from above.
