HISTORY
The “Museo della Resistenza, della Deportazione, della Guerra, dei Diritti e della Libertà” (‘Museum of the Resistance, Deportation, War, Rights and Freedom’) was opened in 2003 and has a name that is as long and complex as the cultural, economic and social transformations it examines.
The core of the museum is in Palazzo dei Quartieri Militari, designed by Filippo Juvarra in the early 18th century, but as per the concept of a “museo diffuso” (“widespread museum”) it also includes and showcases many of the historical sites in Turin’s urban fabric. From the Sacrario del Martinetto, a symbolic monument commemorating Turin’s contribution to the Resistance, to the air raid shelter in Piazza Risorgimento and from the army barracks in Via Asti to the block of Teatro di Torino, the museum brings together traces of history still conserved in Turin, giving you the chance to examine the close relationship between history and the city.
VISITING MUSEO DIFFUSO DELLA RESISTENZA DI TORINO
Museo della Resistenza has spaces for temporary exhibitions and a permanent display with evocative multimedia installations in the air raid shelter discovered during the restoration of the building. As well as the Resistance, the museum also focuses on the themes of rights and freedom with temporary exhibitions on many different aspects of this period of history, from the Shoah to women’s rights, immigration to the Balkan War, and the words of democracy to the problems of refugees.
The visit to the other sites of the museum, transformed by the urban revolution and often forgotten, will acquaint you with a series of stories that all form part of our identity. Here you can reflect on the importance of the memories and values of the Resistance and the fundamental rights and freedoms of people, of which not everybody is aware, either due to their age or background.
Whether you are history experts or simply keen to learn more, the Museo diffuso della Resistenza is certainly worth a visit.
