If you want to learn about the Rome that exists outside of the city centre, you must take a trip to the stunning Villa dei Quintili, a little treasure hidden away among the uncontaminated nature of the Roman countryside.
The entrance is on the Appian Way and from here you will access a residence that in terms of dimensions was second only to Hadrian’s Villa. It was built in the 2nd century A.D. by the Quintili brothers, consuls and rich landowners who Commodus later accused of conspiracy, confiscating all their possessions. The Emperor loved staying here for long periods because, as the Greek Olympiodorus wrote, “the villa has everything that you would find in a medium-sized city”. And you couldn’t really argue. There was a hall for banquets, a nymphaeum, a hippodrome and the baths, 14 metres high with large windows and multicoloured marbles. Located on high ground, the villa was ventilated during the sticky Roman summers and warmed during the winter via terra cotta pipes inserted in the walls that conveyed preheated air. A visit to Villa dei Quintili will be a walk that expands your knowledge of a city that remains infinite in time and space. Find out about our guided tours.
